MTN’s Experience with Signalling Firewalls
Telecommunication networks are increasingly targeted by sophisticated attacks exploiting signalling protocols such as SS7, Diameter, and GTP. These vulnerabilities can lead to severe risks, including subscriber geolocation tracking, call interception, denial of service, and fraud. MTN has implemented a robust threat intelligence framework by deploying advanced signalling firewalls across its operating companies, aligned with GSMA standards (FS.11, FS.19, FS.20). This presentation explores MTN’s journey in transforming signalling firewalls from passive security controls into active threat intelligence sensors. By monitoring interconnect traffic at critical ingress and egress points, MTN collects actionable intelligence on anomalous signalling patterns, enabling proactive detection of attacks and fraud attempts.
