Securing the mobile industry’s future in Africa – risks in focus in 2025 and beyond

This talk will address the trends, threats and the collaborative efforts of Africa’s operators and other mobile ecosystem stakeholders to better defend their networks and customers against fraud and security threats in the region.

José Sobreira, Unitel AngolaJosé Sobreira has more than 25 years of experience in the exercise of Fraud and Security Management in the telecommunications industry. He started his professional career in 1994 at Vodafone Portugal where he stayed for 7 years. In 2001 he moved to Optimus (currently NOS in Portugal), where he assumed the role of Director of Fraud and Telecom Service Security for 12 years. In 2014 he went to work in Africa, Angola (country where he was born), having joined Unitel with the aim of creating and implementing the company’s Risk, Fraud and Security Department. At Unitel, a mobile telecommunications operator with 20 million customers is now responsible for Fraud (Monitoring and Investigations) and for the following Corporate Security Functions: Cybersecurity, Information Security, Network/Services Telecom Security and Physical Security. Internationally, he is currently Chairing the GSMA Association Africa Fraud and Security Group (AFASG), since 2017, a group that represents the interests of Fraud and Security of all African Mobile Operators in Africa. Throughout his career he has been distinguished at telecom industry international level three times with recognitions of excellence: two distinctions by the GSMA (2002 for his contribution to the development of various PRDs in the fight against fraud and in 2019 for the role played in the leadership of the GSMA Africa Fraud and Security Group) and one by TMForum (2013 for the development of an Industry Fraud Classification Model).
